Giving Horses a Second Chance

Over a decade ago in Norvelt, Pennsylvania, about a dozen horse enthusiasts realized that while their locale humane society shelters were able to satisfy the needs of small animals, none had the facility, finances or staff trained to handle horses and other large animals.

Committed to the assistance of abused and neglected equines, Second Chance Equine Association was formed in 2006. To this day, the organization continues to take in horses that have been surrendered to or seized by a humane police officer or are in life-threatening situations. The horses are rehabilitated both physically and mentally before they are adopted by a new family.

While they are not a sanctuary, Second Chance Equine Association helps owners in short-term need by providing hay and grain for the horses rather than seeking surrender to a humane officer.

In the last 10 years, Second Chance Equine Association has accomplished a great deal. More than 140 horses have been rehabilitated and placed in good homes. Monthly educational opportunities for horse owners are offered. Consultation and help for unintentional horse neglectors is provided to help them avoid seizure and prosecution. A quarantine barn and property have been leased and improvements and planning are ongoing.

The Second Chance Equine Association will join us at the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Walkabout Tour taking place at the Farm Show Complex Equine Arena, May 6th – 7th as our Ritchie Charity. The organization will be selling tennis balls to horsemen in attendance for $5. Those who purchase the tennis balls will take part in the Ritchie Charity Ball Toss on Sunday. Clinton will direct everyone to throw their tennis balls into the arena, with each person trying to get their tennis ball the closest to a pole in the center of the arena. Those closest to the marker will win DVDs and training tools.

All proceeds Second Chance Equine Association raises throughout the event will go directly to the organization to help with their cause. Learn more about Second Chance Equine Association on their website.

If you have a non-profit organization and would like to be our Ritchie Charity at an upcoming tour stop, fill out an application on our website.
